Fashion Design
Course Overview
Learn to design, create and sew your own look with this exciting new course which will bring a creative approach to designing, sewing and up-cycling your wardrobe. It will cover dress design and sewing skills for all levels, from beginners to those with more experience. Design and dressmaking techniques and tips will be learned. Students will be invited to work on their own project, creating from an original concept and drafting the pattern, to the completion of the garment or object. Throughout the course students will learn all the basic sewing skills necessary from threading a machine, sketching a design and inserting zips to taking up a hem and much more! Students will also learn about creating notebooks and mood boards to enhance their design skills and creativity. You will need sharp scissors for fabric, old scissors for paper, notebook/sketchpad, pencil and pen, set square, measuring tape, pins, safety pins, thread, and fabric remnants (approx. ½ metre). It is best if participants bring their own sewing machines though some are available in the school. All modern machines are perfectly good. Machines you have inherited are fine but may need to be serviced. The best fabrics to learn and practice sewing techniques are linen, cotton (not too light), and any old fabric that hasn’t gone limp. Additional Information Suggested fabric shops include: The Cloth Shop (South King Street); Hickeys (Henry Street); Studio 54 (Sandyford); WM Trimmings (Capel Street), Fabric Select (Parnell St.), TWI (Mountjoy square).
